About Nigara Hamono

Nigara Hamono, based in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most distinguished blacksmithing houses. With a 350-year legacy dating back to the Edo period, it began crafting swords under orders from the Tsugaru domain.

Renowned Masters and Modern Legacy
The most celebrated craftsman, Nigara Hiroshi (Kuni Toshinaga), specialized in forging Japanese swords. As an alumnus of Tohoku University’s Institute for Metals Research, he pioneered modern blacksmithing techniques and won numerous accolades. The craft has since been passed down to the 7th-generation Yoshizawa Toshihisa and the current 8th-generation Yoshizawa Tsuyoshi.

The Transition to Kitchen Knives

Following the Meiji era’s ban on sword production, Nigara Hamono transitioned to forging kitchen knives, preserving the samurai spirit and precision in every blade. Each knife embodies the elegance and sharpness akin to a katana, inheriting the soul of samurai craftsmanship.

Nigara’s expertise in metallurgy extends beyond cutlery, encompassing steel beams, architectural elements, and cultural restoration. However, their kitchen knives remain the most iconic, featuring the proprietary "Mokume" (Ripple Pattern) technique.

What is "Mokume"?

Inspired by Hirosaki's Shirakami-Sanchi UNESCO World Heritage Site, particularly the "Anmon Falls" in Nishimeya Village, the Mokume technique reflects the cascading ripples of the waterfalls.

This unique forging method layers 25 sheets of steel and iron, followed by a proprietary blackened acid-etching process, creating stunning, durable, and sharp blades. Each knife is meticulously hand-forged, resulting in one-of-a-kind ripple patterns reminiscent of the natural beauty of Anmon Falls.

Nigara Hamono transforms the solid texture of steel into an homage to Japan's natural heritage, blending art and functionality in every blade.
