About the Blacksmith: Traditional Craftsman Yoshikazu Ikeda

About Ikeda Tanrenjo

Yoshikazu Ikeda began forging knives in 1967 as an apprentice under his father, Kameo Ikeda, the second-generation blacksmith of Ikeda Tanrenjo. His brother, Tatsuo Ikeda, succeeded their father as the third-generation blacksmith.

In 1983, Yoshikazu established his own forge, "Ikeda Tanrenjo." Over decades, he has mastered the art of forging and earned numerous accolades. Sakai Hokushin is one of the hallmark series produced by his workshop.

Words from Yoshikazu Ikeda

"In 1967, I began crafting knives under my father’s guidance and founded Ikeda Tanrenjo in 1983. Since then, I have dedicated myself to preserving the techniques of Sakai forged knives and crafting professional-grade Japanese knives such as Mizuhonyaki and Suminagashi blades. I was honored to be recognized as a Traditional Craftsman in 1988 and currently serve as the president of the Sakai Forged Knives Traditional Craftsmen Association."
