🏮 About the “Higonokami Sadakoma” Brand
🔸 1880s|Origins
Founded by Mr. Komataro Nagao and Mr. Murakami in Hirata, Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture. All knives were handmade, with steel inserted into iron blades and sheaths crafted from brass or black-dyed iron. Handles were often engraved with scenes of people, animals, or nature. A single craftsman could only complete 5–8 sets per day.
🔸 1894|Birth of the Name “Higonokami”
Inspired by a folding knife brought back from Kagoshima, hardware wholesaler Mr. Tasaburo Shigematsu designed a safer folding mechanism by adding a chikiri (tail lever) for ease and safety. Since most customers were from Kumamoto (formerly the Higo Province), he named it “Higonokami.” The knife quickly became a nationwide hit.
🔸 1911|Royal Recognition
During the first Kobe Export Handicrafts Competition, the Crown Prince (later Emperor Taisho) personally selected a Higonokami knife, instantly elevating the brand’s prestige.
🔸 1899–1910|Trademark and Guild Formation
The “Higonokami Knife Guild” was established, eventually consisting of 40 workshops and over 200 artisans. To combat counterfeits, the “Higonokami” trademark was registered in 1910 and restricted to guild members within Miki City.
🔸 Modern Era|The Last Legitimate Successor
Due to changes in regulations and the rise of utility knives, the Higonokami industry declined after the 1950s. Today, Nagao Kanekoma Seisakusho is the only workshop legally permitted to use the “Higonokami” trademark, continuing the proud tradition under the brand name Higonokami Sadakoma.
