Origin of Yamawaki Hamono – Gō Umanosuke Yoshihiro

🔹 The Beginnings of Sakai Forging
Around 401–500 AD (Kofun period), iron forging techniques were introduced to Sakai. The craft was passed down through the Heian era, becoming renowned in the Edo period for tobacco knives and fish-processing blades. Today, over 90% of professional chefs in Japan rely on Sakai knives.

🔹 The “Three Famous Blades”
In the Muromachi period, Hon’ami Kōetsu (of the Hon’ami appraisal family) mentioned in Hyōhō Meibutsuchō that the three most legendary blades were:

  1. Sōshū Gorō Nyūdō Masamune

  2. Kurita-guchi Tōshirō Yoshimitsu

  3. Gō Umanosuke Yoshihiro

It was said that a daimyo house lacking one of these three blades could not be considered a true daimyo.

🔹 Masakuni’s Struggle & Dream
In the late Edo period, smith Masakuni longed to emulate Yoshihiro’s style but struggled. One night, he dreamed of three turtles transforming into cranes flying north. Inspired, he devoted himself entirely to forging and eventually produced a blade he believed captured Yoshihiro’s essence. From then on, he called himself Gō Umanosuke Yoshihiro and continued forging near Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine.

🔹 Legacy & Brand Establishment
The second generation, Masatsugu, preserved the techniques and expanded into hon-kasumi and honyaki knives. In the Shōwa era (1950), the third generation, Hirotsugu, officially registered “Gō Umanosuke Yoshihiro” as the representative brand of Yamawaki Hamono, a name still engraved on their blades today.

📖 Adapted from The Origin of Gō Umanosuke Yoshihiro, compiled in 1979 by Toshihiro Shikida, Deputy Chief Priest of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine.
