Black Charcoal vs White Charcoal:
• Black charcoal: sealed cooling inside the kiln, stable heat
• White charcoal: quenched in ash, achieves higher heat
Most smiths use:
→ Coke for the early forging stages
→ Switch to pine charcoal for quenching
The Honoo・Guren series is forged using pine charcoal + coke, maintained at around 850°C.
