Located in Hirosaki, Aomori, Nigara Hamono is one of Japan’s most prestigious bladesmith families, with over 350 years of continuous forging history.
Originally appointed as swordsmiths to the Tsugaru Domain during the Edo period, the workshop has endured:
Industrial modernization during the Showa era
Post-war corporate restructuring
Formal recognition as a Traditional Craft workshop
Kunitoshi Nigara (art name: Kunitoshi)
Renowned Japanese swordsmith
Techniques designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Aomori Prefecture
Educated at Tohoku University Institute for Materials Research,
he studied under Dr. Kotaro Honda, a pioneer of modern metallurgy,
successfully integrating scientific metal research into traditional forging.
His techniques were passed to:
7th generation: Toshihisa Yoshizawa
8th generation (current): Tsuyoshi Yoshizawa
Due to the historical sword abolition edict,
Nigara Hamono no longer produces swords commercially.
However, the spirit, discipline, and standards of katana forging live on fully in their kitchen knives:
✔ Sharpness
✔ Strength
✔ Beauty
✔ Soul
Every blade carries the dignity and seriousness of a true Japanese sword.
“Anmon” is one of Nigara Hamono’s signature Damascus techniques.
Its inspiration comes from Anmon Falls, a World Heritage site located in:
Shirakami-Sanchi, Nishimeya Village, Aomori.
Surrounded by steep rock walls, beech forests, and pine trees,
the waterfall creates deep, layered ripples with a mysterious atmosphere.
Over 25 layers of iron and steel repeatedly forge-welded
Combined with a proprietary dark acid etching process
Resulting in a blade that is:
✔ Stronger
✔ Sharper
✔ More durable
The final surface reveals deep, flowing patterns reminiscent of cascading water —
each blade is entirely hand-forged and one of a kind.
👉 Nigara Hamono aims to let people experience the power of a World Heritage site
through steel, not water.
SG-2 Powder Steel × Anmon Damascus × Kiritsuke Sujihiki
A perfect balance of performance, artistry, and tradition.
Those who truly understand knives will recognize its value at first glance.
